A FINANCIAL TIMES BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR
A GUARDIAN BEST CRIME AND THRILLER OF THE YEAR
A KIRKUS REVIEWS BEST CRIME NOVEL OF THE YEAR

“A soulful, humane, and sparklingly funny novel. Spend some time with Sheldon and company in the Scandinavian wilderness and you just might make peace with your god, your ghosts, and yourself.” — Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story

Sheldon Horowitz—widowed, impatient, impertinent—has grudgingly agreed to leave New York and move in with his granddaughter, Rhea, and her new husband, Lars, in Norway—a country of blue and ice with one thousand Jews, not one of them a former Marine sniper in the Korean War turned watch repairman. Not until now, anyway.

Home alone one morning, Sheldon witnesses a dispute between the woman who lives upstairs and an aggressive stranger. When events turn dire, Sheldon seizes and shields the neighbor’s young son from the violence, and they flee the scene. As Sheldon and the boy look for a safe haven in an alien world, past and present weave together, forcing them ever forward to a wrenching moment of truth.

“This is one of the best books of the season, of any genre.” — Buffalo News

“Miller joins the ranks of Stieg Larsson, Henning Mankell, and Jo Nesbø, the holy trinity of Scandinavian crime novelists.” — Booklist (starred review)

Sheldon Horowitz, an 82-year-old American Jew, witnesses a murder of a woman in Oslo and takes her son on 'a Huck Finn' journey of survival. Although Sheldon suffers dementia, the journey becomes his and our way of understanding the past he might have had. Miller has created memorable characters and great dialogue. By the end of the book we root for the Huck Finn team. I keep telling all my friends to read this book.

This was a wonderful book and I am so happy that I've read it. A long night of non-stop reading, because once you start, you can't put it down. It can be so difficult to find adult fiction worth reading. This book will not disappoint. I will miss the characters, but especially Sheldon, whom you come to know intimately.

I've never been moved to share my thoughts with strangers, but this book compels me to do so. You must read this story. It is beautifully written, with characters so wonderfully conceived and delivered to the page that you care deeply about what happens to them - and are profoundly moved by the history that they bring to life in their quest to bring meaning to their present. The insights expressed are poetic and eloquent, but easily understood and you'll find yourself amazed by the truths that bubble up through the story telling. One of the best books I've read in a long time. I literally could not leave it til it was finished.

What a delightful diversion into the adult mind, what shapes us, our offspring and their offspring, never ending. I am thankful to the author for sharing his gift of storytelling. The imagery was so distinct that I lost myself for a day in Norway. I highly recommend this book.
