The instant #1 New York Times bestseller

"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

I really wanted to like it but it was predictable and the writing was simplistic, full of cliches. Okay it would be fine for a mindless beach read but it was a waste of time for me.

Trite. One of the imitations of Gone Girl whose ending is predictable and, ultimately, boring.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started reading. I didn’t read a summary. I read the sample and then decided I MUST know where it’s going. I loved this book. I hope they make a movie so my husband can know what I’m going on about. (Since he won’t read..)

The end doesn’t even matter in this book (as surprising as it is), it’s the journey that will make you read all night long: the mystery, the silence, the sadness, the psychological quest to understand “why” or even more ...”what is redemption” . There is the curious mind of a psychologist, there is the emotional hurt we feel present in the book from the beginning to the end (but can’t understand why we feel it). We sense there is something tragic that lays beneath the story but we can’t quite put our finger on it, one dead end after another. When is it that we “lose” someone, is it when they die, before, after? and what happens when we “lose” the one person who we thought loved us unconditionally. It’s not a book about grief per se, it’s a book about the horrifying realization and actions we take when we realize we are alone.
