Summary

NEBULA AWARD WINNER • HUGO AWARD FINALIST • “If you want a fantasy with strong characters and brilliantly original variations on ancient stories, try Uprooted!”—Rick Riordan

“Breathtaking . . . a tale that is both elegantly grand and earthily humble, familiar as a Grimm fairy tale yet fresh, original, and totally irresistible.”—Publishers Weekly(starred review)
NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY NPR • BuzzFeed TordotcomBookPage  Library Journal Publishers Weekly

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

I was really excited to read this book, but sadly the style, story, and suggestion of cuckolding, didn’t really jive with me. Definitely seems like some weird fetishy-tumbler-esque story.

I couldn’t put this book down. Wonderfully written prose combined with a fast-moving adventure. A pleasure to read. The descriptions are amazing. The story is unique and original.

I loved this book! Different from every other “fairy tale” or fantasy story I’ve read recently. Still lots of fun, exciting, and surprising.
  • A bit slow at first, but blossoms into a page-turner.

My rating system: 5 stars are reserved for books that totally blow me away, or classics that I believe would have when they were new. I don’t give too many of these out, because it’s the highest rating that you could ever possibly give any book on here. 4 stars for books that I would recommend to just about anyone, or, at least, to someone who doesn’t dislike the genre. 3 stars for books that I would only recommend to someone who is fond of the genre. 2 stars for books that I would be hesitant to recommend to anyone at all, but the book was not a total disaster. 1 star for books that I found so terribly ridiculous, or poorly written, that I wish I had not spent time reading to begin with.

I cant even begin to say what a wonderful and absorbing book this was. I was literally crying for a whole day because it was over and I wouldn’t get to read anymore about The Dragon and Nieschka, I can NOT recommend this enough

Novik captures you and entrances you in a world of magic and evil forests, making you hang on to her every word.

Leery of the affordable price, I hesitated giving the sample a try until I saw a few positive reviews. I haven’t before read a novel by this author, and I’m extremely glad I chose to read this. I fell into the story quickly and easily, the characters are well developed, and the world-building was satisfyingly solid. It harkens back to the days of a wonderful story before bed. I am excited to see what else is written by Naomi Novik!

I picked up this book Saturday morning and then let the chores pile up the rest of the weekend. If you love a good story, you won’t be disappointed.

Loved it. Haven't read a story like it and it was unpredictable.
