  • Heartbreaking and beautiful

This book will bring tears of sorrow to any mother’s heart. Any woman or readers heart at that. It is a beautifully written tale of a woman and her family living through Hitlers war. Not being a Jewish woman in fear, but a Frenchwoman. It really brought light to the suffering of all European people during that time- which I personally never saw spotlighted/acknowledged before. It was beautiful yet tragic and now I yearn to learn and read more on this topic. Terrible things happened to sadden her soul but she chose love in the end.

Exciting, terrifying at times. Get your Kleenex ready for the ending. It’s more than moving. It’s a happy sadness.

Be warned that this book is as triggering as it is excellent. It’s incredibly sad, beautifully written and somehow uplifting. All I can say is “wow” - the usual response when I’ve just finished a Kristin Hannah novel. Everyone should read this book!

I picked this book partly because my family had lived in Europe during the war. It is a sad but great story, about ordinary people who did great things, and I think one that we should all read to prevent another world war. It is very accurate and well-written with lots of detail. I am not someone who cries easily, but I did cry a couple of times reading this book. I am looking forward to more books by this author.

I absolutely LOVED this book! One of the best I’ve read in years! It was extremely well written and grabbed me within the first few pages. The story of what these sisters and all of France survived in WW2 was heart wrenching. A must read! I can’t wait for the movie to be releases! I am a Kristen Hannah fan! She is a master of storytelling!1
