In her enthralling debut, Gilly Macmillan explores a mother’s search for her missing son, weaving a taut psychological thriller as gripping and skillful as The Girl on the Train and The Guilty One.

In a heartbeat, everything changes…

Rachel Jenner is walking in a Bristol park with her eight-year-old son, Ben, when he asks if he can run ahead. It’s an ordinary request on an ordinary Sunday afternoon, and Rachel has no reason to worry—until Ben vanishes.

Police are called, search parties go out, and Rachel, already insecure after her recent divorce, feels herself coming undone. As hours and then days pass without a sign of Ben, everyone who knew him is called into question, from Rachel’s newly married ex-husband to her mother-of-the-year sister. Inevitably, media attention focuses on Rachel too, and the public’s attitude toward her begins to shift from sympathy to suspicion.

As she desperately pieces together the threadbare clues, Rachel realizes that nothing is quite as she imagined it to be, not even her own judgment. And the greatest dangers may lie not in the anonymous strangers of every parent’s nightmares, but behind the familiar smiles of those she trusts the most.

Where is Ben? The clock is ticking...

One of the most intelligently written books I've come across in years. I highly recommend this amazing book!

I enjoyed the plot as well as each character's perception presented in chapter form. I would have liked more dialogue and less descriptive narration.

It’s been a good while since I’ve read a book that really kept me wanting MORE. I literally could not put this book down. I’d tell myself “one hour & I’ll go to bed” - two & a half hours later I’m finished with the book. I sat down a total of three times to read this book & I was done. If you want a gripping, thrilling read, then don’t look any further.

It is overall a great story, especially for a debut novel. Nice twists and very interesting. I personally LOVED the imagery and descriptive language MacMillian used. Well Written.

Totally agree with Uprise 24. Took me a month to read this book. First time in 30 years I have looked at the end to see if I could trudge through the rest of the book to finish it.
  • Intriguing - can't put it down

Author captivated me & kept me intrigued from Chapter 1. She made me feel what the characters were feeling and you could feel the terror in the mother from the words that were written.
