Sherlock was his bread and butter but historical novels were his love. Sir Arthur’s riveting story of the expulsion of Huguenots from France has everything: palace intrigue at Versailles; shipwreck; Indian massacre; all told in those long Victorian sentences and beautiful descriptions, like this of the Canadian forest in autumn: "The tree shadows threw their crimsons and clarets and bronzes upon the fringes of the deep blue sheet of water.” He loved America. A classic well worth reading!
