Cut out half the dialogue and this book would be a page-turner. Still a good read.

    ### Book Review: *Shogun Part 1* *Shogun Part 1* is an absolute masterpiece that immerses readers in the captivating world of feudal Japan. As someone who appreciates well-crafted characters and rich historical narratives, I found this book to be an exceptional read. The characters in *Shogun* are brilliantly brought to life. Each one is distinct and well-developed, with complex motivations and evolving relationships that draw you deeper into the story. The protagonist's journey is particularly compelling, and the supporting characters add depth and intrigue to the plot. I felt a genuine connection to them, and their experiences and growth kept me thoroughly engaged. One of the highlights of *Shogun* is its detailed depiction of Japanese history and culture. The author's meticulous research is evident in the vivid descriptions of the samurai code, social hierarchies, and daily life in Japan. The cultural contrast between the Japanese and the European characters is portrayed with sensitivity and nuance, offering fascinating insights into how the Europeans viewed Japan and the broader world during that era. Additionally, I learned a great deal about the Jesuits and their influence in Japan. The book provides a nuanced look at their power and the complex dynamics between religion, politics, and culture. The Jesuits' role adds an intriguing layer to the narrative, highlighting the broader geopolitical and religious conflicts of the time. Overall, *Shogun Part 1* is a remarkable blend of historical fiction, rich cultural exploration, and compelling character development. It is a must-read for anyone interested in Japan's history, cultural exchanges between East and West, and the intricate tapestry of human relationships.

I only picked this book up because I was recommended the tv show and a random stranger said it was the best book he’s ever read. I can see why? This book has nearly everything to keep a reading going. Palace intrigue, politics, deception, and love. I didn’t hesitate to buy volume two. One of my favorite reads of this year.

Kind of crazy that the FX/Hulu series covers part 1 in the first four episodes!

This was one of my favorite books in the 1990s. I read my copy so many times that it has fallen apart! Back then it was just one single book. It could be purchased whole, instead of split in two to make double the money following along with the TV series. If it was the whole book for one price, it would easily be 5 stars. It’s a scam to charge for two “volumes” of a book that came out in 1975 as one complete novel.
  • This book is awesome!
